Le Petit Prince

This is a book that I needed a French to English dictionary to understand. I understood most of it the first time I read it. But I concentrated so hard on getting the meaning of the French words that I was distracted from the deeper meaning in the book. When I read the book the second time I think I got the deeper meaning. I think that that is that adults need to loosen up and find their inner child and kids need to stay more like a kid instead of leaving childhood behind when they get older and to have true friends is very rare.

I think this book would fit in to Environment aspect of IB. The little prince described his home star to the gentleman he was talking to and talked about the plant life and about the geography of the star. Such as the rose that the prince tamed on the star and that it drove him to travel around because of it’s naïve attitude. In the book the narrator (the gentleman the little prince talks to) infers that scholarly subjects like math, social studies, and language erode the childhood from a person. The prince then traveled to neighboring stars and described them and told about their inhabitant(s).

On his trip to earth he landed in the desert and met a snake. The little prince asked him where men were and the snake said that they don’t live in the desert. So he walked on and asked a flower if man was near by and the flower said that only six or seven exist (yeah right!). He walked on and saw thousands of roses like the one on his star and became disappointed that he left his plant. Then he met a fox and the fox talked about tameness and said that man was not tame and that if you tame an object it becomes unique and it is a very special bond. So the prince tamed the fox and when the prince had to leave the fox he was very sad. Later he met a man that had an airplane crash (the narrator) and told him about his adventures and helped him find a well and on the way to the well the prince talked about how hidden invisible things make objects so special, like the crashed pilot knowing that there is a star that has the little prince on it and that makes the stars unique to the pilot and such like that. Then the prince and the pilot tame each other and the prince leaves to the star he is from and they are both very distraught and then the book ends.

This book had a very childish manner to it and it made me think about my life as a little kid. It was very imaginative and I think what it said to me will make me hold on to my childhood throughout my whole life and cherish it unlike other adults who are obsessed with figures and such like that.
