I choose technology as my topic. It’s a rather broad category and I currently take part in it every day of my life. I would enjoy working with it in other areas than I currently am. I think I can improve not only this category itself, but human life in general through working with technology.
Currently I use technology very much after school in the form of a computer. I chat with my friends, gather information off of the internet, design web pages, play various games and do homework. If I was able to further work in this area, I would improve ways information is brought to people using their computers or computer-like counterparts. I would find out ways how to stream line web pages for a more efficient download by end-users and I would aim for standards-compliant coding as more browsers should be able to display the page quicker and more accurately.
Also dealing with computers is open source software. Open source software is software that people from all over the world can collaborate on and embetter. People can download the software itself, use it and test for bugs at the same time. The users can then report the bugs to the developers and then the developers and various other people can work on the bug and create a patch. The community behind OSS is amazing and can sometimes be quicker than regular tech-support. Most projects have forums people can go to and post their problems with the software and a few minutes later they will have how to fix it. If I took a larger role in OSS and actually knew how to program software, I would spread the word about OSS to more people as current companies are able to blind the average user to other software products, some of which are free (all OSS software is) and are just as good as the software currently used, if not, then better. I would also help develop patches to various bugs.
One of the areas of technology that I would like to get more involved in is transportation and modes for it. I know that there are alternative cars being developed out there and I would like to help with that development and spread information about alternative vehicle, such as ones powered by fuel-cells. Another mode of transportation would be space travel. I would like to learn more about modes of space travel and find ways to improve current ones and develop new ones that are able to travel further and faster than ones we currently have. I would also make these transporters safer for humans, or perhaps develop robots that can function just as well, if not better, than humans in outer space.
Another area is biology, marine biology to be specific. I would help create ways to explore the deep ocean and make it safer for possible human occupants of these vessels. The reason for exploring the ocean more would be to discover how the environment we live in works more and to find possible solutions to our problems, such as the raising of the seas. Is this a natural occurance, or was it brought about by humans or a combonation of both? Needless of the answer it is a problem and plant life, such as algae, which like other plants can obtain of the CO2 in the air and convert it to the more useful O2 and possibly be part of the answer to the problem.
I think that I could improve many areas of technology and human life through it, no matter what area I am working in.
